Volkswagen Golf R Ignition Switch Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to re-learn several systems after disconnecting the battery related to the Ignition Lock Cylinder and Ignition Switch on Volkswagen Golf R?
    A:
In case of battery disconnection, a number of systems have to be learnt again before they can properly operate. The steering lock housing is installed under the steering column electronic control module which is composed of a cast-metal lock housing, ignition lock cylinder, ignition switch and electronic immobilizer induction coil. Start by removing the cable on the negative terminal of the battery. Then take out the steering column covers, steering wheel, clock-spring and steering column switch assembly. In models that have automatic transaxles, make sure that the shift linkage is in Park when taking the lock cylinder out or when reinstalling the lock cylinder. Insert a key into the lock and switch the key to the On position, and unconnect the electrical connector with the electronic immobilizer induction coil. To unlock the key lock cylinder, leave the key in the On position and position the mark on the trim with the access hole. Take a straightened metal clip and insert it in the hole of the cylinder and draw the key and lock cylinder together with the induction coil out of the housing, taking care not to lose the electronic immobilizer induction coil which is part of the lock cylinder and cannot be removed separately. Installation of the key lock cylinder follows the same procedure whereby it should be placed in its original position and pushed in until it clips into place. Flip the Lock position key and take out the key. In the case of the ignition switch without the keyless entry system, loosen the steering column mounting bolts and make the steering column lower and disconnect the electrical connector to ignition switch, unlock the ignition switch by pushing the tabs in the lock housing and pull out the ignition switch. In cars that have the keyless entry system, remove the center console, disconnect the electrical connector on the switch, open the tabs on the switch, and remove the switch out of the console. To remove the lock housing, remove the steering column covers, trim, and steering column electrical connections, loosen the mounting bolts of the steering column and lower the steering column. Unscrew electrical connector to ignition switch and electronic immobilizer induction coil and find then head of sheare bolts on top of steering column bracket, drill holes in all of these, do not damage mounting brackets. Installation is the opposite of removal, screwing the new shear bolts till they explode their heads.
