When the battery is disconnected, there are a number of systems that will need to be re-learned before they can perform the same tasks. The first part is to detach the cable with the negative battery terminal. The second step is the removal of the engine cover and air filter housing. Lift the car and support it on jackstands, and then take off engine under-covers. Take out the protective cover of the starter solenoid, disconnect the electrical connectors and harness retainer of the starter motor, where applicable. Use a screwdriver to remove the plastic starter motor upper mounting bolt harness retainer by unscrewing the harness retainer and unscrewing the retainer. In the case of the automatic transaxle, also unscrew the bracket nut and bracket of the lower bolt. Then loosen the lower mounting bolt that is used to install the starter and extract the starter. In models having a DSG transaxle, the starter motor is eliminated by pulling it out of the top of the engine compartment. Installation is the opposite of removals, that the fasteners of mounting the starter motor are tightened firmly.
