Volkswagen Golf SportWagen Air Filter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the air filter on Volkswagen Golf SportWagen?
    A:
On four-cylinder BPY and five-cylinder engines, the air filter is incorporated in the engine cover. For 1.4L four-cylinder (CZTA and DGXA) engines, start by releasing the inlet hose clamps at the front and rear of the engine cover, then disconnect the inlet air resonator pipe and the vent hose. Next, disconnect the inlet air duct from the front, lift the engine cover from the right side off the ballstuds, then the left side, and remove it. Place the cover upside down to remove the water drain pipe by rotating it clockwise, then lift it off to prevent damage. Remove the air filter housing cover screws, depress the locking tabs to separate the housing halves, and unhook it from the engine cover to remove the filter. Clean the inside of the air filter housing with a damp cloth, and installation is the reverse of removal. For 1.8L and 2.0L four-cylinder engines, release the air guide top cover clips and remove the top cover (except for 2.0L CBPA engines), then release the lower clips and remove the guide. Remove the fasteners securing the filter housing cover, detach the smaller hose if equipped, lift the cover to remove the air filter element (or remove the filter clip fastener and clip for 2.0L CBPA engines), clean the housing, and installation is the reverse of removal. For 2.5L five-cylinder engines (CBTA and CBUA), release the intake hose clamps at the rear and disconnect the intake hose from the MAF sensor, then disconnect the MAF sensor electrical connector and detach the smaller hose if equipped. Remove the fresh air intake duct mounting screws, lift the cover off the ballstuds, place it upside down to remove the filter housing mounting fasteners, rotate the housing up to unhook it from the engine cover, and remove the filter. Clean the inside of the air filter housing with a damp cloth, and installation is the reverse of removal.
