To install or remove the wheel trim or hub cap (where it exists), tighten up the 1/4-turn of the driveaxle or hub bolt when the vehicle is on the wheels, and also unscrew the wheel bolts, but do not exceed the 1/4-turn limit which can damage the wheel bearing. Lift the front part of the vehicle, and place it on jackstands and block the rear wheels so that the vehicle does not roll over, and then take the wheel away. Take the splash shield at the bottom of the engine away. In the event of models with a bolt-on flange, unscrew the bolts holding the inner CV joint in place on the transaxle drive flange or half shaft and remove the retaining plates. Straps have to support the driveaxle to avoid damage. With a splined shaft model, put a drain pan beneath the CV joint, slightly pry the inner CV joint out, and watch not to rupture the
Differential Seal. Partially remove ABS wheel speed sensor out of the slot so that it does not damage it in the case of driveaxle withdrawal. Loose the driveaxle/hub bolt, and then loosen the balljoint mounting nuts and detach the steering knuckle and balljoint to the control arm. When the outer joint becomes stuck in a hub, punch it open with a brass drift or a dead blow hammer, or by the use of a puller, as necessary. Inspectively rotate the steering knuckle outwards and remove the driveaxle outer constant velocity joint out of the hub and then manipulate the driveaxle out of the underside of the vehicle, removing the gasket of the inner constant velocity joint where applicable. Do not leave the car on its wheels and have one or both driveaxles back off to prevent the damage of the wheel bearings. Installation requires that the transaxle drive flange and inner joint mating surfaces are clean and dry, the outer joint lubricated and the hub splines engaged, and a new bolt installed, but not fully tightened. Use the steering knuckle and balljoint to connect to the control arm, and position the inner driveaxle joint with the transaxle flange, then fit the attaching bolts and plates. In the case of splined shaft models, a new spring clip is necessary, with the seal lubricated, and the driveaxle inserted in the position with the CV joints held up. Install the splined part of the inner CV joint into the gear in the differential side by attaching the spring clip, and about 1/2-inch (4 mm) of grease to the outer CV joint splines and fit in the stub axle to the hub. Install the control arm balljoint studs, screw in the nuts and snap the driveaxle in place in the transaxle. Lastly, screw in the wheel, drop down the vehicle, screw the driveaxle/hub and wheel bolts and fill up the transmission fluid in case some leaked.
