Volkswagen Golf SportWagen Fuel Tank Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What precautions should be taken regarding the fuel tank and battery disconnection on Volkswagen Golf SportWagen?
    A:
On five-cylinder models, whenever the fuel system has been opened it must be bled to prevent damage to the catalytic converter. Whenever the battery is disconnected, several systems must be re-teamed before they will work properly. The following procedure is much easier to perform if the fuel tank is empty. Begin by removing the fuel tank filler cap to relieve fuel tank pressure, then relieve the fuel system pressure. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal, remove the rear seat cushion, disconnect the Fuel Pump control module for four-cylinder models, and disconnect the electrical connector and fuel supply line quick-connect fittings from the fuel pump module. For AWD models, ensure to remove the additional access cover and disconnect the transfer pump/fuel level sender connector. Raise the rear of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, then remove the right-rear wheel and the rear inner fender splash shield. On Golf models, open the fuel tank filler flap, remove the mounting fastener and plastic liner, then disconnect the fuel filler tube mounting fasteners and hoses. On all Jetta models and 2014 and earlier Golf models, unclip the ABS sensor wire from the bracket, remove the rivet and protective shield. Disconnect the exhaust system hangers and remove the center and rear mufflers from the vehicle. If equipped, remove the fuel filter and cap the fuel lines. During the next step, note that the fuel filler tubes remain attached to the fuel tank and are removed as a unit with the fuel tank. Support the fuel tank securely, remove the fuel tank mounting fasteners and the retaining strap mounting fastener, then remove the strap and carefully lower the fuel tank. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring to tighten the fuel tank mounting fasteners to the specified torque. On five-cylinder models, bleed the fuel system, reconnect the cable to the negative battery terminal, then start the engine and check for fuel leaks.
