Volkswagen Golf SportWagen Steering Column Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the steering column on Volkswagen Golf SportWagen?
    A:
The steering column is removed by first straightening the wheels by parking the car and in automatic transmission models, the shift lever is put in PARK. Unplug the cable on the negative battery terminal and deactivate the airbag system. Unscrew the steering column covers and the Steering Wheel being careful not to rotate the steering shaft. Unscrew the lower instrument panel trim, which is below the steering column and remove the multi-function switch. Unscrew the wiring harness clips, connectors and ground wire on the steering column. To remove the cable guide cover, push the tabs on both sides of the cable guide. In manual transmission models, all models have a crash brace fastener and brace over the pedal clutch. Use a length of wire to fasten the bottom part of the steering column to the top part. Take off the footwell trim panel, identify the relative position of the steering shaft lower universal joint relative to the steering gear input shaft, and loosen the pinch bolt which holds the universal joint in place. The next step would be to take out the steering column mounting bolts, detach the universal joint, and the steering gear input shaft and then run the column out of the instrument panel. To install, insert the column into place and attach the U-joint with the steering gear input shaft and fit the pinch bolt without tightening it. Fit the steering column mounting bolts but do not screw them at this point. Take out the wire and in the event that a new steering column was fitted strip out all the protective material applied on it during transportation. Installation Installation is completed by reversing steps of removal with the exception of the airbag clockspring in the steering wheel assembly, which should be installed centered and the steering wheel bolt tightened to the prescribed torque, the column mounting bolts and lastly tightening the U-joint pinch bolt when the column mounting fasteners are firmly in place.
