  The next set of procedures are only an account of the removal and installation of the Transmission Control Module (TCM). In case of a TCM replacement, then it is supposed to be done by a qualified technician or repair shop that has the appropriate equipment to swap the contents of the old module to the contents of the new module. TCMs can only be found on automatic transaxle vehicles and on transaxles of the DSG models, the control module is integrated into the transaxle and must be serviced by a highly qualified technician or repair service. Golf models have the TCM placed behind the splash shield of the front inner fender of the driver. The first step is to loosen the left-front wheel bolts, lift the front of the car and place it safely on jackstands. Dismount the front wheel on the left, and the inner fender splash screen. Find the TCM, de-hook the TCM bracket holding clips and detach the TCM out of the bracket. To install, disconnect the latch of the TCM connector, and pull out the connector and it is then installed in reverse of removal. In the Jetta models, the TCM is found under the wiper cowl on the passenger side in 1.4L, 1.8L and 2.0L models, but on 2.5L models, it is found alongside the battery. To maintain the TCM, remove the wiper cowl to reach the TCM, disconnect the negative battery cable, find the TCM, disconnect the TCM connector latch and unplug the connector. Unscrew the TCM bracket holding clips and take the TCM out of the car, whereupon insertion is the opposite of extraction.
