Volkswagen Golf SportWagen Wheel Hub Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the front wheel bearing and front wheel hub on Volkswagen Golf SportWagen?
    A:
In order to take off the wheel trim or hub cap, loosen the wheel bolts and driveaxle bolt by a maximum of 90 degrees when the vehicle is standing on the wheels. The second thing would be to loosen the wheel bolts, lift up the vehicle and place it safely on jackstands before removing the wheel. Next are the brake caliper, caliper mounting bracket and brake disc that should be removed off the hub with the support of a piece of length wire or rope under the brake caliper. Take off the wheel speed sensor, and then remove the driveaxle/hub bolt, striking out the CV joint of the hub with a soft-faced hammer; it must not pull off, a puller will be required. Install spline-drive tool by removing the shield on the Steering Knuckle taking out the disc shield mounting bolts, then the hub/bearing assembly mounting bolts on the back of the steering knuckle and cleaning out the bolt head recesses. In an instance where the tool fails to connect with the fasteners with the driveaxle fitted, remove the driveaxle. The hub/bearing component in the steering knuckle and driveaxle is to be carefully removed without overextending the inner CV joint. To install, it must have smooth mounting or must not have burrs and nicks on the mounting surfaces of the steering knuckle and driveaxle splines and then install the hub/bearing assembly. Apply a multi purpose grease to the axle splines, insert the driveaxle into the hub/bearing assembly as the driveaxle is connected to the steering knuckle and then install a new driveaxle/hub bolt but do not tighten. Install the brake disc, caliper mounting bracket and caliper and ensure that the hub/ bearing bolts are tightened to the prescribed torque, and clearly tighten the fasteners to the correct torque levels. Lastly, grease the wheel, loosen the jackstands, lower the vehicle and screw the driveaxle/hub bolt and the wheel bolts to the required torque.
