Volkswagen GTI Rack and Pinion Boot Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the Rack and Pinion Boot and reinstall the wheel on Volkswagen GTI?
    A:
Before removing the wheel, loosen the lug nuts and lift the car up and place it on jackstands. The third step is to remove the tie-rod end and jam nut. Take away the outer steering gear boot clamp using a pair of the pliers and the clamps are attached to it and are of a spring nature and can be easily released. Using diagonal cutters, cut off the inner boot clamp and slide off the boot. Prior to fitting the new boot, tape the threads and serrations on the end of the steering rod to prevent drying up the small end of the new boot. Install the new clamps and insert the new boot into place in the steering gear until it fits into the groove of the steering rod. When the tape is taken off, the tie-rod end is installed followed by the wheel and the lug nuts. Lastly, lower the car and screw the lug nuts in the required force.
