Volkswagen Jetta Exhaust Manifold
The Exhaust Manifold of the Volkswagen Jetta occupies the high point of the exhaust system, and its primary responsibility is to collect the hot fumes exiting the individual cylinders and hurry them to the catalytic converter whilst preventing the occupants from inhaling dangerous fumes. The manifold is bolted directly onto the engine block and contains a gasket to stop leakage; the number of separate runners is the same as the number of cylinders in the engine. A four-cylinder Volkswagen sedan has four tubes whereas a sporty VR6 has six. With hot gas escaping the pistons, the pressure pulse flows through the runners, and the rush evacuation prevents backpressure, preventing the intake reversion as seen in the absence of the evacuation, which would have consumed power and mileage. There are two broad designs of Volkswagen models over the years, one being heavy cast iron, which is valued because of its durability, and the other being made of stainless steel tubular, which is lighter and accelerates the gas velocity a little more, improving throttle response. - Q: How to remove and install an exhaust manifold on Volkswagen Jetta?A:In order to get the exhaust manifold out, the vehicle needs to be lifted and rested out on jackstands in the first place. After the engine has cooled, dampen the manifold heat shield retaining clips and bolts with penetrating oil in order to loosen any rust, then take the heat shield off and apply penetrating oil to the mounting of the exhaust manifold fasteners. Unset the attachment of the exhaust pipe and the exhaust manifold and dispose old flange gasket. Disconnect the electrical connector of the oxygen sensor and pull off the sensor on the exhaust manifold. The next step is to take off the nuts attaching the exhaust manifold, then the exhaust manifold and the old manifold gasket with some models possibly requiring the secondary air injection pipe to be removed in order to access this. This is done by use of a stud removal tool or two nuts crammed together to remove the old studs within the Cylinder Head. Check the exhaust manifold, cracks or damages, change it in case needed. Clean the mating surfaces of any gasket material using a scraper taking care not to scrape or punch holes into the surfaces which may cause leakages in the exhaust. Test mating surfaces with straightedge and feeler gauge; when surfaces are warped beyond boundaries, it must be replaced or resurfaced. Fit new exhaust studs in the cylinder head, and fitting the manifold with a new gasket and self-locking nuts, secure them by gradual tightening in stages, the nuts, beginning at the center and moving outwards, to the recommended torque. Lastly, apply the anti-seize compound to the threads of the exhaust manifold studs and assemble the threads in the reverse order and start the engine to verify that there is no leakage of exhaust.
