The instrument cluster cannot be serviced, but should be replaced as a whole. The data in the instrument cluster control module should be recorded with a factory scan tool before removal and the new cluster needs to be programmed with a factory scan tool. This job is better done by a VW dealer or any other qualified repair shop in case they need to replace the unit. First, remove the negative cable out of the battery. The second step is to take off the instrument panel trim and upper steering column trim cover. Next take off the screws that hold the cluster to the instrument panel. Disconnect the electrical connection, which is clamped by a lever, by pushing the instrument cluster out to a position where the lever is lifted and rotated to the other end of the connector to disconnect the electrical connection. To re-install, make sure that the lever is in the unlocked form when fitting the connector to the full extent, and after fitting the connector, rotate the lever to lock. Last, the installation is the opposite of removal, and it is important to make sure that the cluster is pulled straight out to avoid breaking the electrical connector pins.
