Volkswagen Passat Fuel Pump

The Volkswagen Passat Fuel Pump is the device that forces gasoline from the tank to the engine and provides the pressure required for each combustion process. Earlier carbureted models utilized a mechanical pump on the block that was powered by the camshaft, pulled fuel at about six psi, and allowed a float valve to prevent overflow. When injection was introduced to replace carburetors throughout the Volkswagen range, the pump was relocated to the inside of the tank and became electric, generating 40 to 60 psi, remaining cool in gasoline, and being cut off by the computer during a crash. The level sender that feeds the dash gauge is also supported by this in-tank assembly. In case a Passat cranks but fails to start, listen for an audible whir, then check at the connector, then the relay, or run pressure checks. The previous high-flow mechanical units had a capacity of delivering as many as 130 gallons an hour but commonly required a regulator, whereas the recent electric hardware is able to adjust the pulse width needed to provide power to large engines and reduce fire hazard. The Fuel Pump should be in line with the requirement; however, for the style applied, the estimated requirement is calculated by multiplying the horsepower by 0.5, or by 0.75 when it is boosted, and dividing the result by 6.2 to translate pounds into gallons. The modern Volkswagen models can start up, accelerate, and produce less pollution, and these attributes can be attributed to healthy pressure. All in all, the Volkswagen system has developed from a complex lever-operated diaphragm to a computer-controlled in-tank electric Fuel Pump that constantly supplies the cylinders with fuel.

Choose OEM Fuel Pump for superior quality and long-lasting durability. They match the Volkswagen's factory specifications exactly and pass strict quality control. Volkswagen Passat Fuel Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to diagnose issues with the Fuel Pressure Sensor and Fuel Pump for insufficient fuel delivery on Volkswagen Passat?
    A:
In case you suspect the delivery of fuel is not adequate, then you should check the battery to figure out whether it is fully charged before observing the fuel pump fuse, and restrictions in the fuel filter as well as observing the lines of fuel flow. Put the transmission into Park or neutral and use the parking brake. With an assistant listening to the fuel pump in the fuel tank, have an assistant switch the ignition key On and Off. In case of no sound, disconnect electrical connector of the fuel pump and test the battery power across the terminals with ignition key On. In case the battery voltage is not indicated, verify the continuity of the fuel pump circuit, the associated fuses, the relay, and the ground circuit. When the power and ground circuit are good yet the fuel pump fails to run, disconnect the fuel pump and test the wiring and connectors to determine that they are open, and replace the pump where necessary. A fuel pressure test is to be done by releasing the fuel pressure and removing the engine cover in case it has one. Uncouple the fuel supply line on the Fuel Rail and attach pressure gauge using T-fitting and adapter hose. Switch the ignition key on and off and record the pressure on the gauge. When the fuel pressure is below the recommended pressure pinch-off the fuel return line and again turn on the ignition key, but this time make sure that the pressure does not push above 85 psi. When the pressure is now higher than required, change the fuel pressure regulator and when still not higher examine restrictions in the fuel lines and filter and examine the fuel pump module. In case the pressure recorded is greater than the specified one, inspect the fuel returning line of the engine and remove any restrictions. When the fuel pressure meets the specifications, then switch on the engine and make sure that the fuel pressure does not exceed 5 to 10 psi than that which was earlier measured. Unless it is, check the vacuum at the fuel pressure regulator hose and change the regulator in case it fails to reduce the pressure with vacuum on it. Lastly, test a fuel system hold pressure, observing it ten minutes at rest, the engine is switched off, the fuel system pressure should not be lower than 32 psi, determine whether there are spills in the fuel line, leaking injectors, or faulty parts. Turn the ignition key on and off until the maximum pressure is registered, squeeze the supply hose and watch any pressure reduction to identify the cause of any leakage.
  • Q: How to relieve the fuel system pressure and replace the fuel pump on Volkswagen Passat?
    A:
Discharge the pressure on the fuel system. In front-wheel drive models, you can remove the carpet of the luggage compartment, in all-wheel drive models, you can remove the cushion of the rear seat and then remove the access cover of the fuel pump. Unscrew the Fuel Tank flange fuel pump electrical connector and fuel supply and return line, cut the clamp in wire cutter and make sure to use different clamps in the re-packing process; the fuel supply line is black and the fuel return line is blue. Use alignment marks on the fuel tank and flange in the event that there are none, and in case of two-wheel drive models the marks are at different positions compared to those of all-wheel drive models. Using a suitable tool to loosen the fuel tank flange retaining ring, lift the flange up and unplug the electrical connector of the fuel level sending unit off the underside of the flange unlatching the fuel return hose. With a special tool, turn the fuel pump 15 degrees anti clockwise and remove it out of the fuel reservoir; this will leave behind any left over gasoline in the fuel reservoir that will spill out. Disconnect the fuel pump wiring by removing the wiring terminal nuts, loosen the clamp to loosen the fuel hose then make notes of the routing position to connect it back. Reassemble the new fuel pump, inner reservoir section, and flange in the reverse sequence in which they were removed with tooth washers being installed under the wiring terminal nuts and ensure a new clamp keeps the fuel hose in place. Wipe the area of the sealing and place a new seal, and then place the fuel pump and the inner reservoir part in the fuel tank reservoir and align the notch with the right-hand mark and press it firmly until it fits. Turn the assembly 15 degrees clockwise to hook the clips but the notch fits in the left-hand mark. Connect the fuel level sending unit connector and return hose, and place the flange of the fuel tank, aligning the marks and then pressing it down till fitted and the retaining ring is tightened. Installation Revert the steps of removal.
