If the battery is disconnected, several systems must be re-learned before they will work properly. The instrument cluster is not serviceable and must be replaced as a complete unit. The instrument cluster control module data must be saved using a factory scan tool prior to removal, and the new cluster must be programmed with a factory scan tool. For this reason, it is best to have a VW dealer or other qualified repair shop perform this job if replacement of the unit is required. First, disconnect the negative cable from the battery. Next, remove the steering column upper trim cover, and for 2011 models only, remove the radio. Then, remove the center vent fasteners from the radio opening in the instrument panel, and pry the left-hand vent, instrument cluster trim, and center vent out from the instrument panel as one piece. After that, remove the screws securing the cluster to the instrument panel. Pull the instrument cluster out from the instrument panel and remove it, taking care to pull it straight out to prevent damaging the electrical connector pins. Installation is the reverse of removal.
