2002 Volkswagen Cabrio Valve Cover Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and reinstall the Valve Cover for Diesel engine on 2002 Volkswagen Cabrio?
A: In order to take out a camshaft cover it is necessary to first unplug the electrical wiring of the fuel cut-off solenoid at the connector. The second step is to disconnect the crankcase breather hose and regulator valve to the camshaft cover. Unscrew the three nuts holding the three camshaft cover assemblies and make sure the washers and seals are reclaimed. The next step is to take off the cover very carefully without touching the cylinder head, but in case it is tight, do not use the lever but feel your way along the cover giving it a slight tap with the soft-faced mallet. Reattach the camshaft cover gasket and check it to see whether it is damaged or worn and replace it in case of need. Carefully polish the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and camshaft cover and ensure all the old gasket and oil are removed but do not damage the surfaces. To install, do the process in reversible manner, and the gasket should be in proper position on the cylinder head without shifting it to the camshaft cover as one lowers it to its place. Install the camshaft cover retaining screws/nuts with the recommended torque and in attaching hoses that were clamped with crimp type connectors, replace with standard worm-drive clips. Lastly, connect the fuel cut-off solenoid lead again to restore the fuel system.
