2004 Volkswagen Passat Cylinder Head Parts and Q&A
Q: What is the correct procedure for disassembling, organizing, and inspecting cylinder heads during engine service on 2004 Volkswagen Passat?
A: Most engines have a wide variety of new and rebuilt cylinder heads that are available at dealerships and auto parts stores and it is often more convenient and cost effective to buy a replacement head as opposed to dismantling, inspecting, and refurbishing the old one due to the special tools required to do so as well as the fact that replacement parts are not always easily available. Disassembly: This is where the intake and exhaust valve plus other associated parts are removed, although these have not been removed yet, the camshaft(s) and lifters must be removed beforehand; otherwise, it is better to label these parts carefully and have them separately stored to be reassembled. Label the valves and store them with their parts so as to keep them in order before extracting the valves. Install a spring compressor and compress the springs on the first valve and un-screw the keepers, being careful that you have the correct one to fit the compressor. Be very careful when releasing the compressor and remove the retainer, spring, and spring seat (when necessary), and then remove the valve and remove the oil seal of the guide. In case of a valve binding, press back and deburr the revelation groove. Do the same with the other valves and have everything in place to be reinstated. Having cleared and covered the valves and parts, carefully clean and examine the heads, so that any work of dismantling the engine should be finished before, the cleaning and examination of the cylinder head commences.
