2005 Volkswagen Passat Coil Springs Parts and Q&A
Q: How to properly remove and replace the rear coil springs and shock absorbers on 2005 Volkswagen Passat?
A: It is best to loosen the wheel bolts, place the front wheels in chock so the vehicle is not going to move around, and place the rear of the vehicle on jackstands under the rocker panel flanges and then take out the wheel, which significantly enhances the ability to reach the springs. Place floor jack underneath rear of trailing arm and apply a little pressure to the jack to take the pressure off the spring upper mount of the shock absorber. Loose the shock absorber upper mounting bolts, gradually lower the floor jack, the spring is not fully extended at this stage as the shock absorber on the opposite side restricts the downward movement of the axle. Put the floor jack under the other trailing arm, take off the shock absorber upper mounting bolts and then gradually lift the jack until the coil springs are fully extended. Disassemble the spring, upper insulator, and lower bushing, inspecting the springs to look at cracks and chips in it, and change them as a set in case of any damage and wear and tear on the upper and lower insulators, and replace them accordingly. The installation process is the opposite of the removal process, whereby the coils springs should be fitted in the spring seats correctly. Install the shock absorber upper mounting bolts by tightening them to the required specified torque, lowering the vehicle and tightening the wheel bolts to the required specified torque.
