Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, then remove the shift knob and the center console. Next, take out the fasteners and the shift lever assembly insulation, disconnect the shift lever assembly electrical connectors and harness clips, and remove the air filter housing, battery, and battery tray as necessary to access the shift lever on the transaxle. Place the shift lever assembly in neutral and disconnect the shift cable from the lever and bracket at the transaxle, detaching the cable from any brackets. For Golf models, remove the cross braces from under the vehicle, disconnect and lower the exhaust, then remove the heat shield and tunnel cover. Take out the fasteners from inside the passenger compartment that attach the shift lever assembly floor bracket, lower the shift lever assembly, and remove it along with the cable from the vehicle, with installation being the reverse of removal and adjusting the shift cable as necessary. For Jetta models, attach a piece of string or cord to the end of the shift cable, then work in the passenger compartment to remove the bolts attaching the shift lever assembly to the floor. Lift the shift lever assembly out and carefully pull the cable from the opening in the floor, detaching the string when it is seen. Installation is the reverse of removal, pulling the string and cable through the vehicle while installing the shift lever assembly, and adjusting the shift cable as necessary.
