Volkswagen Brake Drum Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the rear brake drum on Volkswagen Cabrio?
    A:
Removing the rear brake drum To do this, loosen the lug bolts of the rear wheel, block the front wheels, lift the rear of the car and carefully place in jackstands then remove the relevant rear wheel. Tap and pry the top out of the middle of the brake drum very carefully with a hammer and large flat-bladed screwdriver or chisel, and dispose of the top, thus, discarding the cap should it be disfigured. Undo the cotter pin of the hub nut and the locking cap and dispose of the cotter pin because another one will be required during installation. Unscrew and take out the rear hub nut and slide off the toothed washer and loosen the outer bearing out of the middle of the drum. It is now possible to remove the brake drum assembly by hand, but this might be hard and awkward because of a tight fit or binding, when tight, a mallet of rubber or plastic will work the periphery of the drum, and the parking brake must be disengaged. Loosen the parking brake as much as possible in the cable, and then place a screwdriver in either of the wheel bolt holes of the brake drum to push the wedge key upwards so the brake shoes can completely rewind. To examine, clean the brake shoe assembly and the drum with the brake system cleaner, inspect the drum, whether it is worn or damaged, and the interior of the drum, whether it is scored or not; in case it is badly scored, the drum should be machined or removed. Check the internal diameter at various locations to verify that it is not oval and, in case of non-refinishing, both drums have to be replaced. To install, clean the new brake drum with brake system cleaner, install bearing races, inner bearing, and oil seal, grease outer bearing. Getting ready To install the brake shoe(s), completely disengage the brake shoe wedge key, grease the hub bearing seal, and assemble the assembly onto the stub axle. Fit the outer bearing and toothed thrust washer and screw down the hub nut with a screwdriver to about 10 ft-lbs when turning the brake drum. Loosen the hub nut gradually, but so that the toothed washer may be moved side-to-side with slight effort and the nut is clamped on with a new cotter pin and the hub topped with the cap to the center of the brake drum. Squeeze the brake pedal a few times using the self-adjusting mechanism, redo the same on the other rear brake assembly when needed, inspect and tighten the parking brake cable, and lastly fit the wheel(s), also lower the vehicle and tighten the wheel bolts to the required torque.
