Catalytic converter is a very dependable and easy to use device that does not need any maintenance however there are some important facts that the owner needs to know about so that this device can operate well till the end of its service. In the case of gasoline powered models, it is important to remember not to use leaded gasoline because lead may coating the precious metals within the converter reduce the efficiency of the converter and may even cause its destruction. The ignition and fuel systems should be maintained within the schedule suggested by the manufacturer and in case of the misfiring of the engine, then the driving should be restricted as much as possible unless the problem is rectified. It is not recommended that the car can be pushed or towed as it can fill the converter with fuel that is not burnt and thereby overheat when starting. Also at high engine speeds one should not turn off the ignition. There can be a foul odor of exhaust gases and this is caused by low-quality fuel, but this can easily be solved after several thousand miles. The catalytic converter has a life span of 50,000 to 100,000 miles and in case it is not effective, it has to be replaced. With both gasoline and diesel models, fuel/engine oil additives are also not to be used as they can damage the converter. When the engine burns oil to the extent of generating blue smoke, then the vehicle should not be used. Also, one should keep in mind that the catalytic converter works under very high temperatures, and it is dangerous to park in undergrowth or on long grass after a long run. Finally, the converter is delicate and one should not hit it using tools when servicing it.
