Volkswagen Cabrio Heater Core Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the heater core and blower motor on Volkswagen Cabrio?
    A:
In models which lack air conditioning, the first step would be to undo the negative battery cable, and you would need the activation code of the stereo in case it has an anti-theft. Take off the cigarette lighter/dash switch panel, and pull out the heater/ventilation control unit of the dash, and disconnect the wiring connectors of the unit. Unfasten the control cables, labeling them to be installed correctly and make sure that they are properly laid upon reinstallation. In the case of heater/air conditioning control cables, loosen the corresponding cable on the control unit, loosen the passenger side dash shelf and loosen the cable on the air distribution/blower motor case. Install the new cable (without any kinking) and ensure that the control knob is functional and then re-install the control unit. In the case of the heater core, you have to empty any pressure in the cooling system, clamp the heater hoses, loosen them at the heater core fittings, and remove the dash panel. Free up the ground terminal block, unclamp the fusebox/relay plate assembly and remove the required trim panels. Identify the profile of the outer dash mounting frame that holds bolts and loosen the wiring harness and take the frame out of the car. Disassemble the footwell duct systems, unconnect the wiring connectors and take out the air distribution / blower motor housing. Position the assembly, keeping the core fittings on the top of the assembly to avoid spillages of the coolant, and replace the damaged seals. Install the heater core back in place being sure to clip it in place, and fill up cooling system. In the case of the heater blower motor, disconnect the negative battery cable, remove the shelf to the passenger side of the dash and disconnect the motor wiring connectors. Reduced the motor assembly down and put it back into place. In the case of the heater blower motor resistor, the wiring connectors should be disconnected and the clamps should be released and the resistor should be removed out of the housing and put back by attaching the resistor to the housing. In these models that have air conditioning, the steps are closely similar to the heater control unit and the blower motor, with the end result of the heater core being to open the refrigerant circuit and that is to be done by a VW dealer.
