Volkswagen Cabrio Starter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the starter motor located on the bellhousing at the front on Volkswagen Cabrio?
    A:
It is a starter mounted at the bellhousing in front of the engine and has the same mounting bolts as the front engine mounting bracket with the engine being supported with a lifting beam or engine hoist during removal. Start by unplugging the negative battery cable and making sure that it is out of the terminal, not forgetting to have the appropriate activation code to any anti-theft stereo system. Then make sure to take off the front engine mounting bracket of the starter motor, unscrew the wiring connector of the cable guide at the starter motor and then de-bolt the cable guide. Disconnect the solenoid supply cabling at the connector and (where fitted) unbolt the PAS hose guide at the starter motor mountings. Take off the power cables at the back of solenoid housing by taking off nut and washer in the power cable terminal post. Next loosen and remove the starter upper mounting bolt then loosen and remove the nut on the mounting stud, under the starter motor, and direct the starter and solenoid assembly completely out the bellhousing aperture. Installation: Reverse the process of removal making sure to say at the correct torque the mounting bolts, and put the front engine mounting bracket back in place where needed.
