- Q: How to remove and install the rear wheel and brake components using a Stub Axle on Volkswagen Cabrio?A:In order to loosen the rear wheel, loosen the wheel bolts, jack up the rear of the vehicle, place it on axle stands and put the front on chocks. On rear drum brakes, one needs to take off the appropriate rear wheel and remove the brake drum. In order to reduce the loss of fluid, close the cellophane with the master cylinder reservoir cap. Wipe down the surface near the fitting of the brake line behind the wheel cylinder, unscrew the fitting nut then carefully slide the line off, taking care not to spill any of the fluid and plugging or taping the open end to stop the entry of dirt. Then , loosen and remove the bolts and washers holding the brake back plate assembly together and remove it and the stub axle and examine the stub axle, changing it, but do not attempt to bend it straight. On rear disc brake models, detach the brake disc, loosen and remove the bolts holding the disc back plate then take off with the stub axle and check the disc back plate and disc itself and replace as required. To fit in rear drum brake models make sure that the surfaces that meet are clean and dry, examine the back plate in case of damage and remove any burrs. Install stub axle and back plate assembly and hold it with washers and retaining bolts with the dished washers facing back plate and screw the bolts with the required torque. Attach the cleaned brake line into the back of the wheel cylinder and tighten the fitting nut. Heatly take off any clamps or cellophane, and fit the brake drum and bleed the hydraulic system, but ensure that only the applicable rear brake has to be bled in case care measures were taken to keep as little fluid lost as possible. In the case of rear disc brake models, the stub axle and back plate should be fitted, then the brake disc and the caliper.
