When the fuel system has been opened on a five-cylinder model it should be bled to eliminate the risk of damaging the catalyst converter. There are a number of systems that have to be re-learned whenever the battery is disconnected before they can work properly. All the models follow the following procedure with the in-tank
Fuel Pump. First, discharge the fuel system pressure and release cable which is attached to the negative battery terminal. In order to check the fuel pump module inspection cover, the rear seat cushion should be removed, the carpeting should be lifted back, and the access hole cover should be found. In four-cylinder models, the Fuel Pump Control Module (FPCM) is mounted to the top of the cover, and it is important to take care when handling it because it is not needed to deconnect the electrical connector to the FPCM unless one needs to replace it. Unscrew the electrical connector and electrical lines of the fuel pump module and label them so that they are not confused with each other upon reconnection. Unscrew the lock ring of the fuel pump module with a special tool or pliers, then pull out the fuel pump/fuel level sensor module (as a unit) out of the tank, and ensure that you do not damage the fuel level sensor float arm. Some of the models might have suction tube to the fuel pump module hence take caution when removing. When this is being written, the fuel pump module could not be serviced, other than the fuel level sending unit. Check the flange seal and change it in case it is damaged. To install the early type of the fuel level sender, unscrew the electrical connector of the sensor and unscrew the two sensor lock tabs and pull the sensor directly up the pump module, record the color and position of the wires and then disconnect them. When fitting the fuel level sender, make sure that the locking tabs are clipped into the clips and no additional fixing of the fuel pump module/fuel level sender can be done. To install the later version, grab the fuel level sensor arm, and, with the sensor, draw it in, and upwards to the retaining tab, disconnect the electrical wires, recording their positions and colors. Install the fuel level sensor module on the fuel pump module making sure that the tabs that lock in to place. To install, insert the fuel pump/fuel level sensor module in the tank with the tab on the module facing the tank, and apply a new seal to the locking ring in case the original one is broken. Install the ring by clamping it with the pliers and turning the ring clockwise and the rest of the installation is the same as the removal. Bleed off the fuel system on five-cylinder models.
