Volkswagen Golf R Control Arm Parts and Q&A
- Q: How to remove and replace the control arm on Volkswagen Golf R?A:To loosen the driveaxle/hub bolt (hub bolt may or may not be present), loosen the driveaxle/hub bolt by 1/4-turn when the vehicle is on its wheels and then loosen the wheel bolts. Lift the front of the car and put it on jackstands and block the back wheels to prevent rolling. Loose the wheel and driveaxle/hub bolt, the balljoint-to-control arm nuts. Draw the control arm downwards to disengage it with the balljoint, and, if it has one, disconnect the front level control sensor arm with the control arm. In the right side control arm, you would remove the horizontal control arm pivot bolt on the front side and the vertical control arm mounting bolt and nut on the rear side and then work the arm to the rear and pull it out. In the case of the left side control arm, eliminate the pendulum mount, unscrew the steering column U-joint coupler on the steering gear, unscrew the support bracket fasteners of the exhaust pipe, and unclip the power steering pressure line. Take away the horizontal control arm bolt on the front and vertical nut and bolt at the back. Removal of pivot bolt To remove pivot bolt, place a floor jack under the subframe, take out the two outermost subframe-to-body bolts, looseen the front subframe bolts and lower the rear by not more than 3-15/16 inches. Take the control arm out of the subframe, and clean it well, looking after any cracks or wear, but particularly in the inner pivot bushings. Replacement of bushing involves a hydraulic press and best done at a machine shop in the automotive shop, press out the old bushing and install the new one ensuring that it fits into position. To install, remove all parts in the reverse order, with new fasteners, bring the outer end of the control arm to the approximate normal ride height to be ensured, then tighten all of the suspension fasteners to recommended torque values, secure the vehicle on the ground, and tighten the wheel bolts and have the front end alignment checked and adjusted as required.
