Volkswagen Golf SportWagen Axle Shaft Seal Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the Axle Shaft Seal on Volkswagen Golf SportWagen?
    A:
In order to change the drive flange oil seals in the front-wheel-drive versions, first loosen the wheel bolts and the driveaxle/hub bolts, apply the parking brake, lift the front of the car, and place it in a safe position on jackstands and remove the wheel. Then pull out the driveaxle and unbolt the heat shield of the right side driveaxle and on 6-speed models, the inner fender liner may have to be taken out to reach it. Place an assembly under the transaxle to receive any spilled oil, and then remove the mounting bolt in the center of the drive flange, screwing two bolts into the flange, and gripping it with a prybar. When the flange and compression spring are removed, record the installed depth of the oil seal and pry it out by using a large flat-bladed screwdriver. Wipe area around the oil seal opening, grease lips of the new oil seal, and carefully fit in place making sure that the sealing lip is facing inwards then tap into place with an appropriate tubular drift. Wipe the oil seal and grease the lips and then slide the drive flange with the compression spring through the oil seal connecting it to the differential gear. Install and tighten the flange mounting bolt, reattach the driveaxle and then the wheel and lower the vehicle checking the transaxle oil level. In the case of the selector shaft oil seal, get the parking brake in place, elevate the front of the car and place it on jackstands. Should you need to replace the air filter housing, it may be removed to expose the shift lever at the transaxle, unscrew the locking nut and slide the shift lever off the selector shaft. An oil seal may be carefully peeled off the housing without injuring the selector shaft or housing, clean the seating and shaft, and apply multi-purpose grease on the new oil seal lips before returning it to its place over the end of the shaft with the closed side outwards. To avoid damage, tape up the end of the shaft with adhesive tape and then press the oil seal into place with the help of an appropriate tubular drift. And lastly, fit the gearshift coupling, screw up the locking link and bring the vehicle to the ground.
