Volkswagen Jetta Clutch Release Bearing Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to handle the Clutch Release Bearing during the removal and installation of the transaxle on Volkswagen Jetta?
    A:
The transaxle can be detached by first removing the spring and then the leaf spring mounting bolt at the end of the clutch release lever in 5-speed models. To tool the lever, push the detent spring back at the pivot end to release the lever then withdraw the lever and release bearing out of the guide sleeve. Then use a screw-driver and flatten the tabs and pull the bearing off the lever and then the plastic pivot out of the ball stud. In 6-speed models, take out the clip that holds the breather assembly to the release unit and then detach the breather assembly to the release cylinder but be sure to plug the breather assembly and cap the release cylinder as soon as possible. On the inside of the transaxle housing, take out the release cylinder/release bearing unit assembly fasteners and unit. To check 5-speed models, take the bearing with the outer race and spin the inner race keeping the pressure, the latter should not spin freely, and it should not have a rattling sound. Wipe off the bearing and check it against damage, wear and cracks without dropping it in solvent. In 6-speed models, leak check and rotate release bearing and apply pressure: replace component in case of leakages or does not rotate easily. The bearing and release cylinder are actually a single piece, therefore, in case one of it is defective, the whole system needs to be changed. To install 5-speed models, lubricate ball stud and plastic pivot with copper grease, grease the release bearing surface and install the spring on the release lever with the plastic pivot in position. Place the lever and bearing and then press the release lever against the ball stud until the spring holds the lever. In 6-speed models, place the release cylinder /bearing on the transmission input shaft, attach and slightly screw in the mounting fasteners evenly so as not to break the ears on the slave cylinder/release bearing. Install the O-ring at the end of the release cylinder, and tie the breather assembly to the slave cylinder and secure the line using the clip. Installation should be finished with bleeding the system, making sure that the brake fluid level in the reservoir is correct, and removing all spilled brake fluid using water.
