Precaution These models have an anti-theft radio installed, therefore, be sure to have the activation code when disconnecting the battery. Unless care is taken to disconnect the battery, the battery may cause driveability problems, which may only be fixed with the help of a scan tool, and, also, the battery may cause warning lights to be displayed on the instrument panel, which the user will need a scan tool to clear. The ability to do these tasks is not available in most of the public scan tools, and a trip to a dealer service department or a facility with appropriate instruments may be necessary after service work. Check the full length of every battery cable periodically to check against damage, cracked or burned insulation and corrosion, which may result in starting problems and reduced engine performance. Inspect cable-to-terminal connections, searching any crack, loose strands of wires and corrosion; the presence of white fluffy deposits under insulation is evidence of corrosion and requires a replacement of the cable. Always connect the negative cable with the negative post of battery and the positive one with the negative post of battery in order to avert shorting of the battery. In changing the cables, unplug them at the battery and at the opposite end keeping a record of the routing to enable proper installation. In the event of replacement, do not forget to bring the old cables to ensure that you get the same parts since the positive cables are usually in red color and are generally bigger whereas the ground cables are normally in black and smaller. Use a wire brush to remove rust and corrosion off the threads of the starter solenoid or ground connection, and apply a coat of battery terminal corrosion inhibitor or petroleum jelly so that any future corrosion is prevented. Connect the cable to the post and tighten the fitting nut/bolt firmly and make sure that the new cable does not stretch before attaching it to the negative battery post by connecting the negative cable to the negative battery post.
