To replace the latch, begin by opening the hood and removing the nuts or bolts to detach the latch assembly. For Passat models, pry off the retaining clip and detach the safety latch handle. Next, detach the cable from the latch assembly and remove the latch, with installation being the reverse of removal. For the cable, detach the cable case from the bracket and release the cable end from the latch in the engine compartment. In the passenger compartment, remove the driver's side kick panel and the screws securing the hood release handle, then pull the handle downward to release the cable. Attach a wire or string to the end of the old cable, and in the engine compartment, release the cable grommet from the cowl and the clips at the inner edge of the left front fender well until the cable is free. Pull the cable through the cowl into the engine compartment, connect the string or wire to the new cable, and pull it through the cowl into the passenger compartment. Complete the installation by fastening all cable retaining clips in their original location and seating the cable grommet properly. For the support strut, open the hood and support it securely, then use a small screwdriver to detach the retaining clips at both ends of the support strut before prying or pulling sharply to detach it from the vehicle, with installation being the reverse of removal.
