All models have front and rear bumpers made of fascia and metal structural beam. In order to take off the front bumper, park the car and put on the parking brake, lift the car safely on jackstands and open the hood. Take the splash shield off underneath the engine, and off each front wheel well, take out the screws holding the edges of the bumper cover. Get the retaining tab out and the lower grilles off the bumper on both sides and, when fitted, the fog lights. Unscrew and loosen the two bumper retaining bolts beneath the car after which the bumper assembly is carefully removed by sliding it off the front side of the car, making sure to pull out any washer hoses should there be headlight wipers. In case the bumper cover is required to be detached of the metal bumper, push pins or screws are to be removed. On Volkswagen Passat vehicles between 1998 and 2001, screws holding the bottom of the bumper cover, the
Hood Latch mechanism, and the front turn signal lights are removed, and the bolt holding the bumper cover in each of the turn signal light slots are removed. Use screws to remove the top of the bumper cover attached to the radiator support panel and remove the bumper. In 2002 and subsequent models, unscrew the upper and lower ends of the bumper cover, then retract the inner fender liner and then feel your way in removing the bumper cover off the alignment guides. In the case of the rear bumper, at the rear of the wheel wells, strip away the screws holding the bumper cover together, in the trunk section, remove the retaining bolts by folding down the floor covering, and removing the screws. The bumper assembly should be carefully removed, and the edges that are adhered should be loosened by hinging the bumper assembly upwards. The bumper support brackets are removable by removing the screw mounts. In VW Passat wagons and 1998-2001 sedan models, to remove the cover of the bumper, raise the rear of the vehicle, then take the screws that hold the bottom of the bumper cover of the vehicle, and open the trunk to remove the cover. Take out the bolts that hold the metal bumper on the support brackets. In 2002 and subsequent sedan models, loosen the bolts around the bottom of the bumper cover, the bolts at each end of the front, and the taillight housings, and then slide the bumper cover off the alignment guides. Removal is the opposite of installation, in which all the retaining bolts and screws are loosely fitted and then tightened completely.
