How to replace the water pump on Volkswagen Passat?

In order to change the water-pump, you should first lift up the vehicle and place it squarely on jackstands after which you should drain the coolant. Install the radiator support panel in service position and disassemble the serpentine drivebelt and mechanical cooling fan/ clutch assembly. In case of a four-cylinder engine, the power steering pump pulley is fastened with a screwdriver, the outer part of the water pump pulley assembly is unbolted using the screwdriver and unscrew the V-belt. The next thing to do is to take out the alternator and the power steering pump without disconnecting the hydraulic pipe/hose(s) getting it out of the mounting bracket. Take out the nuts/bolts of the alternator/power steering pump bracket, unscrew the hose clamps and unattach the coolant hoses of the water pump housing and thermostat housing cover. Unscrew the retaining nut and remove the hammer head bolt connecting the water pump to the lower timing cover and remove the water pump housing. Take off the O-ring between the block and housing and use another on installation. Removal of the pump out of the housing will require unscrewing of the retaining bolts on a bench, disposing of the gasket and it should be noted that the pump is not serviceable. Removal is the opposite of installation, and the installation must be done using a new gasket and O-ring. Add coolant to the required level and then start the engine and check the leakages. In the case of V6 engines, loosen the timing belt, then the water pump mounting bolts and the pump themselves and clean the mating surfaces and apply RTV sealant to the gasket surface before attaching. Install the water pump bolts to an appropriate torque and make sure the timing belt is installed and apply the coolant and bleed the system. In the case of after-run coolant pump, lift the vehicle, empty the coolant, loosen the radiator lower hose, and loosen inlet and outlet hoses. To remove the pump, undo the electrical connector and the retaining bracket bolt and then reassembled in the reverse order, filling and bleeding the cooling system.
