Do not drive the vehicle without a thermostat, the computer might be in open loop which is harmful to emissions and fuel economy. When the battery is not connected, some of the systems will have to be re-learned before they can work correctly. Other models have a bypass thermostat at the top line of the bypass hose. The first step is to uncover the engine cover and unplug the cable of the negative terminal of the battery. Lift the front of the car and place it safely on jackstands and then get the under-vehicle splash shield removed. Empty the
Radiator of its coolant, and reuse or dispose of used antifreeze. In the case of a four-cylinder BPY engine, disconnect the radiator hose clamp, lift out the radiator hose of the thermostat housing, remove the drivebelt and the alternator. Disassemble the upper coolant hose clamps, hose, and coolant tube fastener, and remove the coolant distribution housing and be ready to experience spillage of the coolant. The thermostat and the housing are in on unit and should be replaced simultaneously. Wipe the mating surfaces, fit a new O-ring and re-fit the thermostat housing, ensuring that the bolts are tightened to the correct torque. Installation is also reversed (do in reverse order), apply thread locking compound to the accessory bracket fasteners, refill and bleed the system, and run the engine to verify there are no leaks. To install CCTA and CBFA four-cylinder engines disconnect the charge air pipe, after-run coolant pump bracket, strap of wiring harness, radiator hose directly behind the air conditioning compressor. Slacken the intake manifold support bracket and take off the oil separator. Take off the thermostat cover and make a record on how the thermostat was installed prior to cleaning the mating surfaces. Install the thermostat and install a new O-ring in the cover and reconnect it, binding the fasteners to the correct torque. Installation Reinstallation should be done in the opposite sequence, refill and bleed the system, and look after leakages. In the case of five-cylinder engines, the intake manifold and thermostat cover are to be removed, paying attention to the manner in which the thermostat was installed. Wipe the mating surfaces, fit the thermostat seal and reconnect the cover using another O-ring, screw tight. Install the system backward, refill, and bleed the system, and check it to ascertain whether leaks occur.
