2007 Volkswagen Rabbit Crankshaft Seal Parts and Q&A
Q: How to replace the rear crankshaft seal and housing on 2007 Volkswagen Rabbit?
A: The seal is part and parcel of the housing and should be replaced in a block. Start by taking off the flywheel/driveplate. In timing belt engines, the engine maker suggests the removal of the oil pan, but in timing chain engines, it is not necessary to do so and only the rear seal and the housing can be replaced. Then remove the locating dowels on the rear of the cylinder block and then remove the adapter plate. Unbolt the rear oil seal housing and the housing and the corresponding oil pan bolts. Prior to fitting in a new rear seal and housing, the mating surfaces of the cover, intermediate plate and cylinder block as well as the oil pan rail must be clean and free of the gasket material, with a hard plastic or wood scraper but care should be used not to scrape the aluminum alloy of the rear housing. Apply 1/8-inch (3 mm) RTV sealant on the flange of the new rear oil seal housing and the surface of the oil pan. The new seal has a guide sleeve which is placed in the center; place the housing and seal in position on the end part of the crankshaft, and slowly insert the housing and seal. In the case of timing chain engines, sealant should not be applied on the oil pan as it may be forced inward. Install the rear oil seal housing bolts evenly with a series of steps to the required torque, then take away the tool, but be sure to observe the recommendations of the sealant manufacturer regarding the required time to cure before adding oil. Lastly, put in the adapter plate, ensuring that it rests over the oil seal housing and on top of the dowels at the back of the cylinder head and reverse the operation of staging.
