2008 Volkswagen Rabbit Crankshaft Seal Parts and Q&A
Q: How to remove and install the rear Crankshaft Seal in the control housing on 2008 Volkswagen Rabbit?
A: Take out the flywheel/driveplate. Peel the oil seal on the back of the control housing, and lookpout not to scrape or nick the crankshaft or the housing. Mark the distance it has recessed into the bore, to be able to install the new seal to the same depth. Wipe the seal bear on the block with a shop towel clearing off any drops of oil and dirt. Lube the outside of the diameter of the seal and place it over the end of the crankshaft with the lip of the seal facing towards the engine. Ideally, fit a seal installation tool, which acts to press the new seal back into place, otherwise, a large socket, a piece of pipe, or any blunt tool can be used to carefully press the new seal firmly into the seal bore and to the edge of the engine block. Install flywheel/driveplate then install transmission.
