2007 Volkswagen Rabbit Shock Absorber Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the shock absorber strut assembly on 2007 Volkswagen Rabbit?
A: Removal of the strut assembly can be done by first removing the wheel trim or hub cap and loosening the driveaxle and wheel bolts when the vehicle is on the wheels. Chock the rear wheels, engage the parking brake and then lift up the front and rest on jackstands, taking off the wheel and axle bolt. Unhook the stabilizer bar connection with the strut, dismount the fastener and bracket of the brake hose and ABS sensor harness connector to the strut. Then remove the strut-to-knuckle nut and hit the bolt out with a hammer and a punch. Take off the balljoint-to-control arm nuts and disconnect the control arm to the balljoint, and deconnect the front level control sensor arm (AD), when fitted. Position the driveaxle to avoid injuring the inner CV joint by taking off the strut and the steering knuckle separately. Realign the control arm with the steering knuckle temporarily. Using one hand and taking off the three strut-to-shock tower fasteners, remove the cowl panel and prop the strut and spring assembly. Check the strut body, leaks, dents, cracks and coil spring, chips or cracks and spring seat should be checked on its deterioration. In case issues are detected then disassemble the strut. To install, ensure that the strut bearing retainer has one of the arrows on it, then slide the strut assembly into the fenderwell and screw in the mounting bolts, make sure that one of the arrows on the strut bearing retainer points towards the front of the car. Insert the steering knuckle into the strut flange and then fit the bolt and tighten the nut with a required amount of torque. Connect the speed sensor wiring harness bracket and brake hose again and then loosen the connection between the control arm and the steering knuckle. Install the driveaxle into the splines of the hub and align the control arm to the balljoint. Connect the three upper mounting screws so that they have the required torque, attach the wheel, and lower the car on the ground. Lastly, fit the driveaxle/hub bolt and wheel bolts with the required torque and fit the installation in the opposite sequence of installation.
