2009 Volkswagen Rabbit Crankshaft Seal Parts and Q&A
Q: What is the role of the Crankshaft Seal in the front sealing flange, and what steps should be taken if it is leaking on 2009 Volkswagen Rabbit?
A: The front seal is not removable, it is part of the front sealing flange, and in case of front oil leakage, the sealing flange has to be changed. Start with the removal of the drivebelt and tensioner. Install the crankshaft locking tools to set engine to TDC. Then take out the crankshaft pulley and sealing flange that has fasteners. Work around the whole flange beginning at the alignment holes and then carefully peel the sealing flange off the cylinder block with care not to bend or distort it because it is to be replaced in case it is bent or distorted. Take off the sealing flange of the engine. The machining of the mating surfaces of the cylinder block before the new sealing flange is installed must be carried out with the mating surfaces of both surfaces laid flat and scraped using hard plastic or wood, taking care not to scratch the aluminum alloy. Installation Slide VW special tool T40069 into the crankshaft seal and leave it in place. Load a 1/8-inch (3 mm) bead of RTV sealant into the groove of the sealing flange. Position the special tool above the end of the crankshaft and arrange the sealing flange at the engine block very carefully and then fit the timing cover with fasteners loosely. Install the flange retainers in a diagonal manner by hand and after all the fasteners are tightened, tighten them in a diagonal manner to the required torque. Turn the special tool and strip it off the crankshaft making sure that the oil seal is not damaged. The rest of the installation is in the opposite sequence of assembly; start the engine and inspect against leaks.
