When the need to undertake an overhaul has been suggested because of such problems as leaks of fluids, a piston that is stuck, or a broke bleeder screw, then see the alternatives first before embarking on the undertaking. New and factory rebuilt calipers can be obtained on an exchange basis making the work easier. In rebuilding calipers, have rebuild kits, always rebuilding or replacing calipers in pairs. You can start by loosening the lug bolts on the wheels, block the front wheels, jack up the back of the car, and then place the jackstands securely under the trained car and then remove the appropriate rear wheel. Reduce the loss of fluid by emptying the master cylinder by removing the cap of the reservoir and covering it with cellophane. Wipe the vicinity of the fitting, loosen the brake hose fitting nut to an extent not to unscrew it, and take away the brake pads. Unscrew the caliper attached to the brake hose and take it out of the vehicle. Parking brake mechanism cannot be overhauled, in case faulty or leaky the caliper assembly should be changed. Clean the caliper using brake system cleaner and pry the dust seal carefully and then rotate the piston anti-clockwise to remove it. Take out the piston hydraulic seal and pull out the guide pins and dust boots. Wipe down all parts using isopropyl alcohol or clean brake fluid, check on replacements needed and dampen the piston and new seal in clean brake fluid. Install the new piston seal and dust boot and make sure you seat the new dust boot properly, then grease the guide pins and install new dust boots. Pour fresh brake fluid into the caliper until the caliper empties of the fluid without any bubbles. Next - fit the caliper onto the flexible hose fitting, then the brake pads and caliper and screw the brake line fitting nut firmly in place. Take off the cellophane, drain the hydraulic system, run the parking brake cable and adjust it. Lastly, mount the wheel, bring the vehicle down, screw the wheel bolts in, press the brake pedal to make the pads touch the disc, and test the level of brake fluid.
