Volkswagen Cabrio Fuel Sending Unit Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and inspect the Fuel Sending Unit on Volkswagen Cabrio?
    A:
The fuel tank sender unit is placed on the top of the fuel tank and can be accessed by a hatch on the floor of the load space, it is attached to the fuel supply and with the fuel return hose and gives out a variable voltage signal to the fuel gauge on the dashboard. Its removal contaminates the contents of the tank to the atmosphere and the person must be careful not to touch diesel fuel with his/her skin to prevent infection of the skin, but she has to watch out not to accumulate vapors in a poorly ventilated area. Start by parking the car on a flat area, uncoupling the negative cable of battery and taking out the load space floor trim. Unscrew the screws that hold the access hatch in place, and then unplug the wiring harness of the sender unit and pad the area around the fuel hoses with rags to soak up any spills. Unscrew the hose clamps, disconnect the hoses and record their markings to install them back correctly, unscrew the plastic securing ring and lift the sender unit out of position making sure to keep it above the fuel level until the excess fuel is drained. Look at the float to see if there is any damage, ensure that the spring-loaded fuel pick-up is moving freely and collect the rubber seal to inspect. Clean the wiper and track of the sender unit, test it with a break check and ensure the integrity of the wiper using a multimeter a different resistance indicates that it is working and that an open circuit indicates the need to change the wiper. To install, follow the steps of removal in reverse order, making sure that the arrow marks on the sender unit match with those on the fuel tank and apply clean fuel to the rubber seal and then fit it.
