On installation, a new lock assembly shear-bolt will be needed. The first step is to disconnect the negative terminal of the battery, making sure that you have the right activation code to the stereo in case it has anti theft. Take the key and insert it to the lock and turn it to release the steering lock. To remove the
Steering Column cut the
Steering Wheel off and remove the screws that held the upper and lower shrouds onto the steering column. Unscrew the wiring connectors of the combination switches, unscrew the retaining screws, and remove the two switch assemblies. Carefully take the splined collar off the top of the steering column with a suitable puller and reclaim the spring. A shear-bolt fastens the lock assembly in place which can be removed by either hitting the bolt head with a hammer and chisel or by drilling a hole at the center and pulling it out with a bolt/stud extractor. Unplug the wiring connector, and then pinch the lock assembly up the steering column out of it. Having removed the lock assembly, loosen the screw that holds the ignition switch in the lock assembly and remove the ignition switch at the bottom of the lock assembly. The method to change the lock cylinder is to drill an opening of 1/8-in. diameter in the side of the lock casting at the marked point; doing it is a tedious task, and it is best left to a VW dealer to avoid damaging the lock assembly casting. Installation To install, connect the ignition switch to the lock assembly, and make certain that it is properly connected to the lock cylinder, and that its retaining screw is tightened. Install the lock assembly next by sliding it on the column, aligning with the column lug, and by hand tightening the new shear-bolt, only at this point before reconnecting the wiring connector. Install the spring on the top of the column, the splined collar on the shaft, and the washer over the end of the collar, and put the steering wheel retaining nut on so as to press the end of the collar entirely onto the steering column shaft. Attach the collar when it is firmly in place, unscrew the nut and take away the washer. Test the steering column lock operation and when all things are going well, screw the shear-bolt tight until the head snaps off. Re-connect the wiring connectors to the combination switches, tighten the switch retaining screws, fit the steering column shrouds and after that the steering wheel. Lastly, reconnect the battery and ensure that the switches work.
