Volkswagen Cabrio Steering Wheel Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install a steering wheel on Volkswagen Cabrio?
    A:
The next thing to do is to take out the steering wheel, always place the front wheels at the straight position and unlock the steering lock by inserting the ignition key and then detach the cable at the negative end of the battery, you must have the right activation code to any anti-theft stereo system. In models that do not have an airbag, remove the horn pad in the center of the wheel, remove the horn wiring connector and loosen the steering wheel retaining nut and remove it. align the steering wheel and steering column shaft, loosen the steering wheel off the column splines, lift the steering wheel off the column splines, and in case it is tight tap it at the center or twist it and pull it upwards to loosen it. When the model has an airbag, the airbag unit is to be removed off the center of the steering wheel, screws that held the airbag are to be loosened and removed, and the upper and lower shrouds of the steering column are to be removed. Disconnect the wiring, in steering wheel, attached to airbag contact unit and then take off the steering wheel. Once removed, turn the contact unit ring a little bit so that the wiring connector is at the bottom as a means of locking into place in the central position. To install in a model that does not have an airbag, follow the order of the steps of the removal operation in reverse, matching the marks with those made earlier, screwing the steering wheel retaining nut with the recommended torque, and connecting the negative battery cable again. When using an airbag model, the first step is to install the wheel making sure the wiring connector is properly aligned, the retaining nut is installed and tightened, the steering column shrouds with firmly tightened screws are installed and the airbag unit installed after which the negative battery cable is reconnected.
