Volkswagen Cabrio Steering Column Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What steps are required for the installation of new steering column shear-bolts and intermediate shaft retaining plate nuts on Volkswagen Cabrio?
    A:
New steering column shear-bolts will be needed on installation, as well as intermediate shaft retaining plate nuts. Start with disconnection of the battery negative terminal with the activation code of the stereo being appropriate in case it has an anti-theft system. Take the Steering Wheel and the steering column combination switches off. To uninstall the fusebox, unlock the locking buttons of the bottom of the lower dash panel on the driver side and then proceed to carefully pry out the lower dash trim panel, loosen and remove all the retaining screws and slide the panel downward to dislodge it out of the dash. Unscrew the wiring connector to the Ignition Switch and detach the wiring harness in its clips on the column. Use the retaining clip to take away the trim cover at the bottom of the steering column. Slide off the retaining plate and loosen and pry off the nuts on the intermediate shaft connecting piece, half the pieces of the intermediate shaft. The steering column is fixed with shear-bolts which may be removed with a hammer and chisel or a bolt/stud extractor. Raise the column up and out of the firewall to unlock the bottom holding clip and position it out of the car. Check steering column under damage and deformation, and examine Steering Shaft in bushings, whether there is any free play in it; in case of any wear detected, column is to be replaced as a unit. Install the steering column and make sure the bottom holding clip snaps into the firewall. Fit the new shear-bolts and clamp them as well as they will go until they snap off their heads. Apply the intermediate shaft connecting piece to the upper half of the shaft, align the half of the shafts, and screw them together, then have the retaining plate and fit the new nuts and tighten them to the recommended torque value. Install the trim cover on the bottom of the column and use the retaining clip to hold it in place and make sure that the wiring harnesses are properly laid and cleverly held in place with the column retaining clips before reconnecting the ignition switch wiring. Lastly, fit the lower dash panel, screw the retaining screws in, attach the trim cover and the fusebox cover, fit the combination switches, and fit the steering wheel.
