In order to take out the thermostat, you have to first of all detach the negative battery cable and you need the right activation code of the stereo in the case of an anti-theft system. Then drain out the cooling system. The thermostat is fitted in the bottom of the water pump housing on the right-hand rear of the engine. In models having power steering, disconnect the power steering pump assembly by removing the pump drive belt, loosening and removing the bolts holding the power steering pump mounting bracket and fitting the pump assembly without loosening the hydraulic hose. To remove the thermostat cover, take off the two retaining bolts, release the retaining clamp and disconnect the coolant hose to the thermostat cover and disconnect the coolant hose to the thermostat cover. Take off the sealing ring and dislodge the thermostat, removing the old sealing ring and in the process readying the installation by bringing a new one. To test it, one can make a crude estimate by placing the thermostat in boiling water, in which it is supposed to open when the water boils. When one has a thermometer, compare the exact opening temperature with the specifications indicated on thermostat. When the thermostat does not close when the water becomes cool, then it has to be changed. To install, remove everything in a reverse order, and have the thermostat properly fitted in the housing with a new seal ring, the cover bolts tightened to the recommended torque, and in power steering equipped models the mounting bracket bolts tightened and the drive belt re-fitted. Lastly, pour back the cooling system when it is finished.
