Depending on the specification of vehicle and type of engine, drivebelts can be fitted and both are driven off pulleys fitted to the crankshaft to supply power to the alternator, water pump, power steering pump and, in cars with air conditioning, the refrigerant compressor. The arrangement of the belts, and the objects they are driving differs according to the specifications of the vehicle and the engines, and it could lead to the water pump and power steering pump being fitted with pulleys that fit either a ribbed belt or a V-belt. Ribbed drivebelts on 2.0L engines include an automatic tension device and on 1.8L engines, the belt is tensioned by a power steering pump mount that can be adjusted on its mounting brakets and the V-belt tensioned by swinging the power steering pump. The drivebelt should be tensioned properly at the time of installation to operate and last as long as possible. To remove the V-belt, ensure the car is parked on a flat surface, put the parking brake on, unscrew the negative battery connection, jack up the front part of the car, turn the steering wheel all the way to the right lock, and unscrew the plastic air ducting, loosen the power steering pump mounting bolts, pivot the power steering pump, and push the V-belt off the pulleys, and check it out. The procedure that will be in place during installation is to reverse the procedure that has been followed when removing them and to evenly lay the pulleys and to set the tension correctly by adjusting the power steering pump till the midpoint of the belt can deflect by a maximum of 13 / 64 - inches under moderate pressure and then to secure the mounting bolts and again verify the tension after rotating the crankshaft. To remove ribbed belts, proceed in the same steps and make sure to observe the direction of rotation marks, turn the tensioner roller arm to release tension and remove the belt out of the pulleys. Installation: When installing the ribbed belt, the belt should be passed under the crankshaft pulley and then correctly seated, the tensioner roller arm should be installed and the belt should be wrapped round the required pulleys, the tensioner should then be released and the plastic air ducts should then be reinstalled and in case of a V-belt then this should be installed and then the vehicle should be lowered and the negative battery cable reconnected.
