Current is provided to the cooling fan by the ignition switch, the cooling fan control unit on the left-hand front suspension tower, relay(s) and the fuses or fusible link. The thermostatic switch on the cooling fan is mounted in the left-hand end of the
Radiator and completes the circuit, with two switches in it, which have two speed settings. In other designs that have air conditioning, there is a third switch to operate a third speed setting. When testing the cooling fan circuit, there should be a check on both the speed settings and in the models having twin cooling fan system, when only one fan is working, the belt connecting the fans is likely to be broken. When the fan fails, check the fuses or fusible links first and, should they be all right, continue running the engine until it attains normal operating temperature and then idle. Should the fan not start, remove the wiring plug of the cooling fan switch, and bridge the appropriate contacts with an extra piece of wire, and switch on the ignition. The switch may be faulty in case the fan is running. In case the switch works, test the motor by putting a 12-volt supply to the motor terminals; otherwise, change the motor. In case the fan has not yet started, check the continuity of the cooling fan circuit wiring and make sure that all connections are clean. There is also a possibility that the cooling fan control unit could be faulty; a VW dealer should test it in case there are no faults in the fuses, wiring, switch and the motor. To remove, disconnect the wiring connector on the rear of the cooling fan motor, press out the pins of the fan retaining ring fasteners and unclip the ring to the shroud. Unscrew the motor retaining nuts to access the cooling fan assembly and on models with two cooling fans, loosen the drivebelt and withdraw the second fan where needed. Installation: It consists of the process of undoing the unscrewing process, screwing the fan securing nuts to the required torque, checking the fan drivebelt to ensure it is not damaged, and finally screwing the radiator back. Installation: Once the engine is installed, you have to start it and make sure that the cooling fan starts and works properly.
