Volkswagen Cabrio Wheel Bearing Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What are the installation and maintenance procedures for a sealed, pre-adjusted, and pre-lubricated double-row roller wheel bearing in a car's steering knuckle assembly on Volkswagen Cabrio?
    A:
The bearing is sealed, pre-adjusted, and pre-lubricated and is a type of double-row roller bearing of the type which is supposed to serve the complete life of the car without requiring servicing. One should not limit the driveaxle nut too tight when exceeding the recommended torque wrench setting. An assembly cannot be disassembled and reassembled without a press, but in its absence a big bench vise and spacers can be employed in place of a press. The bearing races on the inside fit closely into the hub and in case the inner race is left on the hub when removing, a knife-edged bearing puller will be required. Start by disassembling the Steering Knuckle assembly and carefully holding the assembly on blocks or in a vise. Press out the hub flange of the bearing with a tubular spacer, and, in case the outboard inner race is in place, scrape it off using a bearing puller. In case of necessity, loosen the same screws to take the ABS rotor out of the back of the hub and put a new one and screw the screws. Remover the bearing retaining snap-ring(s) of the steering knuckle assembly and pinch the outer surface of the steering knuckle and press the entire bearing assembly out. Wash the hub and steering knuckle in case of cracks or wear and replace them, when needed. The snap-ring should always be replaced irrespective of its condition. Apply a light coating of the grease molybdenum disulfide grease to the outer race of the bearing and the surface of the steering knuckle bearing during reassembly. Hold the knuckle of the steering wheel and find the bearing in the hub, pushing it completely into place with a tube spacer. Having sat down, tighten the bearing with new snap-ring(s) in the groove of steering knuckle. Lessee the outer face of the hub flange and place the steering knuckle bearing inner race over the hub flange and press the same onto the hub until it fits against the shoulder. Lastly, make sure that the hub flange turns freely and wipe off all the oil or grease before attaching the steering knuckle assembly once again.
