Volkswagen Cabrio Ball Joint Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What are the necessary steps for installing and removing a ball joint retaining nut or clamp bolt nut on Volkswagen Cabrio?
    A:
New balljoint retaining nut or clamp bolt nut will be needed. The procedures to be followed to take out the balljoint is to loosen the wheel bolts, chock the rear wheels, turn on the parking brake, jack up the front part of the car and put it on the axle stands and have the front wheel removed. The next step is to loosen and eliminate the bolts that hold the inner driveaxle joint to the transaxle flange, holding the driveaxle in place. Indicate the position of the installed balljoint on the suspension control arm, unscrew the retaining bolts, and take away the retaining plate. In the majority of models, the inner retaining bolt may be loosened without removing the plate and bolt, and the balljoint may be disengaged. In order to disengage the balljoint with the control arm, pull the Steering Knuckle assembly outwards. In models with Plus suspension loosen the retaining nut until it is even with the threads on the shank of the balljoint and follow the next steps with it: using a separator, release the balljoint of the steering knuckle, then remove it. To disassemble base suspension models, loosen the front nut and clamp bolt and free the shank of the balljoint of the steering knuckle. Test the balljoint in freedom of movement, and examine the boot in case of any damage, inserting the damaged parts when needed. To be installed on Plus suspension models, screw the balljoint to the steering knuckle and the new retaining nut, fastening it to a definite torque with an Allen key, where necessary. In other models, insert the balljoint into the steering knuckle, accept the clamp bolt and use a new nut and screw it to the required torque. Install the balljoint with the lower suspension arm and fit it and use the control arm balljoint retaining bolts, making sure that they coincide with the earlier marks and tighten them to the proper torque. Lastly, position the driveaxle inner joint and transmission flange and screw the retaining bolts, and then fit the wheel, lower the vehicle and screw the wheel bolts to a set of required torque.
