removal To take out engine first dissociate the transaxle with the engine, and then eliminate the lower oil pan and the front seal of the crankshaft flange. Loose the camshaft sprockets and take off the control housing, and then the chain tensioner of the oil pump, and the guide. Then remove the pick- up tube holding fasteners and pick- up tube, pick-up tube-to-oil pump seal. Take out the mounting fasteners of the upper oil pan and cautiously pry the oil pan off, taking care to do so at the number 6 and number 1 crankshaft bearing caps with a flat-bladed screwdriver or similar object. Installation: To install, clean off all old sealant on the block and oil pan using a scraper, clean the mating surfaces with brake system cleaner then apply RTV sealant to the oil pan-to-cylinder block mating surface. Make sure the threaded holes of the block are clean and verify the oil pan flange is not distorted and if it is, remove the nicks and burrs. Coat the flange of the oil pan with a 1/16 inch bead of RTV sealant and place the upper oil pan onto the top of the cylinder block with two mounting fasteners facing forward and backwards tightening them manually. Install VW special tool #2036/1 or similar to ensure that the oil pan fits into the cylinder block. Place the oil pan and special tool, and make sure its edges are flush, and screw in and screw up the rest of the oil pan bolts in a diagonal manner to the required torque. Install the pick-up tube of oil to the pump using a new seal and then the pick-up tube is fitted with fasteners to the oil pan which should be tightened to the recommended torque. Fit the timing chain and tensioner of the oil pump, and finish the installation by reversing the procedure of installation, make sure not to overstep the recommendation of the sealant manufacturer on curing time before putting in oil.
