Volkswagen GTI Air Filter Box Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the Air Filter Box on Volkswagen GTI?
    A:
For 1.4L engines, loosen the clamps securing the air intake duct(s) to the air filter housing and detach the intake duct(s), disconnecting any air hoses and the breather hose. If applicable, detach the crankcase breather hose. On DGXA engines, disconnect the electrical connector from the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. Firmly pull the air filter housing upwards to detach the rubber grommets, then rotate the housing forward on DGXA engines to disconnect from the duct before removing it from the vehicle, with installation being the reverse of removal. For 1.8L and 2.0L turbocharged engines, on Jetta models, release the air guide top cover clips and remove the top cover, then release the lower clips and remove the guide with the air duct hose. Loosen the clamps securing the air intake duct to the air filter housing and throttle body, then detach the intake duct. Disconnect the air injection hose if equipped, and the vacuum line from the air filter housing lid. On Golf models, pull the air filter housing upwards to detach the rubber grommets, rotate the housing upwards at the rear to disconnect from the duct, and remove the bolt at the rear on Jetta models before removing the air filter housing from the vehicle, with installation being the reverse of removal. For 2.0L non-turbocharged (CBPA) engines, available only in Jetta models, loosen the clamp securing the air intake duct to the air filter housing and detach the duct. Pull the air filter housing upwards to detach the rubber grommets, lift the housing and disconnect it from the intake air duct at the bottom. To remove the air guide, release the top cover clips and remove the top cover, then release the lower clips and remove the guide from the air duct hose. Remove the left front inner fender liner to access the lower housing assembly, remove the bolt attaching the guide air intake duct to the bracket, loosen the clamp securing the air intake duct to the lower housing, detach the duct, and remove the fasteners securing the lower housing to the vehicle before carefully removing it, with installation being the reverse of removal. For 2.0L turbocharged (CBFA and CCTA) engines, on Jetta models, release the air guide top cover clips and remove the top cover, then release the lower clips and remove the guide with the air duct hose. Disconnect the electrical connector from the MAF sensor, loosen the clamps securing the air intake duct to the air filter housing, and detach the intake duct from the MAF sensor. On CBFA engines, disconnect the air injection hose from the air filter housing cover, remove the air filter housing cover fasteners and cover without completely removing the fasteners, then remove the air filter housing mounting fastener, lift the housing up, and disconnect it from the intake air duct at the bottom. Inspect the condition of the water drain and hose while the housing is out, and thoroughly blow out all parts of the housing with compressed air before reassembling and installing the air filter housing, with installation being the reverse of removal. For 2.5L engines, the air filter housing is incorporated into the engine cover.
