Volkswagen GTI Fuel Pump

The Volkswagen GTI Fuel Pump forces the gasoline located in the tank to the engine, and the sporty hatch exhales fire when required. The first Volkswagen hot hatches, which operated on carburetors, operated a camshaft-driven mechanical pump, which was mounted on the block and its lever acted on an eccentric to force fuel into the block and deliver between six and fifteen psi, sufficient to maintain the carburetor float bowl at full capacity. When Volkswagen changed the GTI to fuel injection, the model adopted an in-tank electric Fuel Pump that rotates each time the ignition command reaches its relay and bathes in fuel to cool even as it directs pressurized flow of about forty to sixty psi to the injectors. The two versions are similar in the duty of transferring fuel but are in different locations, pressure capabilities, and actuation methods. The mechanical type is located outside the tank and pushes a diaphragm each rotation initiated by the crankshaft; the electric version is located in the tank and is powered by a small motor and is checked by the ECU when an accident or low oil pressure occurs. To determine the gallons per hour rating that an appropriate Fuel Pump should be capable of sustaining, Volkswagen performance fans who aim to reach higher horsepower can determine flow requirements by multiplying projected horsepower by 0.5 in naturally-aspirated engines, or 0.75 in boosted engines, and then divide the result by 6.2.

Volkswagen GTI Fuel Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to concern battery disconnection and the remove the fuel level sensor and fuel pump on Volkswagen GTI?
    A:
The next step is used in AWD vehicles, and it is noteworthy that whenever the battery is unplugged, a number of the systems have to be re-learned before they are able to work correctly. The first step involves removing the cable of the negative battery terminal. In order to gain access to the fuel transfer pump and fuel level sender check hole cover, one must remove the rear seat cushion, recline the carpeting, and remove the cover of the access holes. Then, loosen the electrical connector and take the lock ring off the inspection cover: special tools are sold at most auto parts stores, and it can be done with a pair of pliers; locking one end of the lock ring to one of the tank tabs and the other to another, and turning the pliers slowly to turn the ring counterclockwise. This procedure is advised to drain the gas in the tank. To disconnect the fuel level sender harness connector located inside the fuel tank, reach inside and find the connector and press the tabs which release the connector connector out of his bracket pushing it through. To disassemble the fuel level sender, press the two tabs at the top and slide the sender upwards retaining the arm. Installation is the opposite of removal, whereby the connector of the harness of the sender is embedded into the bracket and then the vehicle harness reconnected. This is because the fuel tank has a transfer pump which cannot be serviced individually and in case of fault, the fuel tank should be replaced as a whole.
