How to access the heater/air conditioning control unit by removing and installing the instrument panel center trim panel using the A/C switch on Volkswagen Passat?

In order to access the instrument panel center trim panel, one has to remove the center trim panel in order to access the heater/air conditioning control unit. After removing the center trim panel, pull the control unit some inches out of the dash, and then it is easy to open the electrical connections and cables at the back. Unscrew the electrical connections at the back of the control head and cut with a small screwdriver the clips and then strip the actuating arm cables off, as needed, recording the color and position of each cable. During the process of installation, one should use the cable retaining clip to fix the cables to the actuating arms and attach the correct color cable to the actuating arm. Installation can be done by leaving the process of removal in reverse.
