Volkswagen Passat Coolant Temperature Sensor measures the amount of heat in the engine coolant and transmits accurate temperature information to the engine control module so that the engine can burn properly and manage the temperature. The Volkswagen Coolant Temperature Sensor is threaded directly into a coolant passage and the tip is inserted into circulating coolant, which means that temperature changes are detected immediately. It is a negative temperature coefficient thermistor with its electrical resistance decreasing with increasing hotness of the coolant. The control module provides a steady five-volt reference signal which is sent into the device, and the variable resistance changes the return voltage. This signal is then converted into an actual temperature reading by the module. Based on this information, the module will increase injector pulse width to a richer mixture during cold starts, cut off fuel as the engine warms, increase idle speed to avoid stalling when cold, and switch on or off the electric radiator fan as required. There are also temperature feedback functions that control functions that have to be held until a warmed-up engine, like opening the exhaust gas recirculation pathway, evaporative emissions purge valve, and transmission torque converter clutch locking. Through coordination of such functions, the sensor assists the Volkswagen engine to prevent rough running and overheating and facilitates efficient emissions control.
